CHIP Renewal Still Simple for Low-Income Families
Earlier this year, the state implemented new policies for the
Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), including a requirement
that families update their income each time they renew their coverage.
For families, this means submitting a recent paycheck stub or similar
proof of income every six months. For the state, this allows us
to verify that these families still meet the CHIP income guidelines.
This is the same process used when families first enroll in CHIP,
and it’s the same process families complete each six months
for Medicaid – the program that serves 2 million of our state’s
poorest children – but it is not the process previously used
for CHIP renewals. Before January, CHIP families could check a box
indicating their income had not changed and their coverage was continued.
That meant a family’s income could go unverified for years.
